Choosing glass for my project!
When we talk about a canopy we are necessarily talking about glass. All sorts of questions then come to mind. First, will the glass, which will be introduced into my structure, be sufficiently safe in case of contact? Are there glasses that insulate better than others? Do textured lenses create more privacy? Are there different degrees of opacity depending on the type of glass I choose? These are all questions that we will try to answer.
The safety aspect of the product is obviously, at all times, a priority.
The glass we use is always tempered. Tempering glass provides superior mechanical properties in terms of impact resistance. This principle is relatively simple in itself. Each glass panel is pre-cut at the cutting center, according to a cutting list specific to your tailor-made project, then introduced into furnaces at very high temperature (up to 700 degrees Celsius). The panels are then cooled rapidly to promote the tensions and compression of the glass, thus considerably increasing its impact resistance. We are talking about a resistance of 2 to 5 times higher than a glass that would not have undergone the tempering treatment. During a fatal shock, the tempered glass panel will fragment into thousands of small fragments. When glass breaks, what is dangerous is when the panel fragments into large, pointed blades rather than thousands of small pieces as is the case with tempered glass. The tempering of glass, in addition to its resistance, provides a higher level of safety in the event of breakage.
In addition to dipping, rolling is another technique that is also used to make the wall more resistant to impacts.
Lamination is the principle by which we glue two sheets of glass together with a film allowing the adhesion of the 2 surfaces. At the moment of an impact, this film between the glasses retains the glass fragments and thus eliminates any risk of injury. Lamination also has sound-absorbing properties that are suggested but more or less considerable when inserted into our steel structures. Other elements allow better soundproofing such as the falling threshold for example, we can talk about this later. However, laminated glass is not what one would initially suggest since its surface, if the glasses are not tempered before lamination, is much more fragile, which makes handling during installation more limiting. The cost of the latter is also much higher. We also always consider the aesthetics of the product. Therefore, during lamination, bubbles often form and are visible on the panel once installed, however small they may be. As aesthetics and safety are a priority, tempered glass is the best choice to integrate into our structures.
Now that the technical course is over, we can move on to aesthetics! The range offered by Projet Acier Montréal includes 12 different types of glass. These types of glasses are carefully selected according to current trends to create the desired atmosphere and meet the desired level of privacy. There are other possibilities than those put forward by our team but as we try to best adapt to current trends, our offer is very complete and varied. The choice depends mainly on the purpose of the space and the look we want to give the space. Textured lenses are often an optimal choice when we want to create more privacy in a room. We can reach different levels of opacity depending on the texture chosen.
Each composition is unique and makes your project a distinctive element in its own right in the indoor environment where it is installed. Just let yourself be inspired and the choices will be made naturally. We are still there to support and advise you throughout the process of your glass roof project.
